The $40,000 401k Rollover Mistake To Avoid
A 401(k) rollover is the process of transferring funds from your 401(k) retirement account to another retirement account, such as an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or another 401(k) plan, without incurring taxes or penalties. This typically happens when you leave a job and want to move your 401(k) balance into an IRA or your new employer’s 401(k) plan.

Why Consider a 401(k) Rollover?
Consolidation: If you’ve changed jobs a few times, you might have multiple 401(k) accounts with different employers. Rolling them over into a single IRA or another 401(k) plan can make it easier to manage your retirement savings, track performance, and adjust your investment strategy.
More Investment Options: 401(k) plans often have limited investment choices, typically offering a selection of mutual funds. By rolling over to an IRA, you might gain access to a broader range of investment options, including individual stocks, bonds, ETFs, and alternative investments.
Lower Fees: Some 401(k) plans have high administrative fees or expensive mutual fund options. An IRA might offer lower-cost investment options, which can reduce the fees you pay and potentially boost your long-term returns.
Flexibility: IRAs generally offer more flexibility when it comes to withdrawals. For example, you may have more control over how and when you take distributions, which can be helpful for tax planning.
How to Roll Over a 401(k)
Choose the New Account: Decide where you want to roll over your 401(k). This could be an IRA with a brokerage firm, a new employer’s 401(k) plan, or another retirement account.
Contact the Plan Administrator: Notify your 401(k) plan administrator of your intent to roll over the account. They will provide instructions and the necessary paperwork.
Select the Rollover Method:
Direct Rollover: Request that the funds be transferred directly from your 401(k) plan to the new retirement account. This avoids any tax withholding.
Indirect Rollover: If the funds are distributed to you first, 20% will be withheld for taxes. You must deposit the full amount (including the 20% withheld) into your new account within 60 days to avoid taxes and penalties. The 20% withheld can be claimed back when you file your tax return.
Complete the Rollover: Once the funds are transferred, confirm with both the old and new account administrators that the process is complete.
Invest the Funds: Decide how to invest the rolled-over funds in your new account. This might involve selecting specific stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, depending on your investment strategy and goals.
Things to consider:
Taxes and Penalties: If you don’t complete an indirect rollover within 60 days, the amount distributed to you may be taxed as ordinary income, and if you’re under 59½, a 10% early withdrawal penalty may apply.
Employer Stock: If your 401(k) holds employer stock, consider the tax implications of rolling it over. There may be special tax treatment for net unrealized appreciation (NUA) on the stock that could be beneficial.
Rollover Timing: If you expect to be in a lower tax bracket in the future, timing your rollover to coincide with that period might reduce your tax liability if any taxes are due.
Plan Rules: Some employers’ 401(k) plans allow you to leave your funds in the plan even after leaving the company, especially if your balance is above a certain threshold. This might be worth considering if the plan has good investment options and low fees.

Energy choice refers to the ability of consumers to select their energy suppliers from a range of competitive providers rather than being limited to a single utility company. This system, also known as energy deregulation, allows consumers to shop around for electricity and natural gas services, potentially leading to lower prices and more customized energy plans. Here's the spreadsheet I show ...

    price is not always the only consideration. A higher rate may have benefits that are not always clear. picking the cheapest supplier might include high pollution, poor corporate management or even questionable ethics. Do you really want to eliminate a supplier just because of rates if they are the better company.

      Price is at the top of my list for what I care about. If it isn’t for you then no big deal. The option to choose based on what’s important to you is the beautiful thing about a free market. A free market will drive the cost of cleaner options down so once they do that I’ll go with those suppliers.

    One wonders what the 50 states’ individual Escheats (lost property) laws have to say about abandoned retirement accounts? Aren’t they subject to the same typical 5-10 year, then must over to the state, laws? And how does Uncle Sam know to get its cut (assuming it wasn’t a Roth), since in most states the lost property gets converted to simple cash and held by the state until claimed?

    From what I remember about checking about Webull, it is owned by Apex Trading - or powered by them. Apex Trading is also into futures - and supplying a platform for traders to get into trading futures with minimal money down (margin?) Futures have a high margin requirement. (Peachy Investor, another channel into starting beginning traders, also uses Apex for futures). Webull is SIPC insured. What do you base your info on that Webull is Chinese owned? TikTok is not Webull. Any more information??

    I just had an estimated electric bill that was higher than I have ever used in my life. When I called to ask how they estimate if it is not based on past usage they replied “well it’s been very hot this summer”. I don’t even have central air! I read my meter to them and my bill was suddenly $50 lower. It’s all a scam.

    • @JarradMorrow
      @JarradMorrow День тому

      I've had that happen to me before. It's annoying when they estimate the amount owed instead of going to your meter to get an actual reading. The good news is that they did a physical reading the following month and credited my account since they over estimated the previous month.

    Hi Jarrad. Love the content. I have 2 401Ks. If my older former employer's 401K is much more than $8,000, can't I put ALL of that money, one big lump sum into my very first ROTH inside my very first brokerage account? Is that a ROTH conversion "rollover"? I have a new 401K with my new employer. Both are independent of each other. How can I transfer my ENTIRE 401K balance, from my previous job, entirely into a ROTH? Can somebody out there please advise? And how can I do this with the least amount of fees? Thank you Jarrad!!!

    • @JarradMorrow
      @JarradMorrow День тому

      You'll pay taxes if you convert money within a Traditional 401k into a Roth 401k (or Roth IRA) so be careful before doing that. It makes sense for some people but only after they've evaluated their current tax bracket situation and expected tax bracket in the future. Keep in mind that there could be benefits to having both Traditional and Roth buckets to pull from in retirement so it could make sense to leave it in a Traditional 401k by rolling it into your current employer's 401k. I have a video coming out in about an hour where I cover the topic of 401k rollovers. If you have more questions after that then leave a comment on that video and I'll try to help.

      @@JarradMorrow Hey Jarrad. I got off the phone with Merrill Lynch. They administer the Walmart 401K for me while employed at Walmart. I transferred my entire Wally 401K balance to a Merrill Lynch Ira account. They said I could do Roth rollovers incrementally so as not to manifest too big a taxable event. I hope I did well here!

    HealthEquity has a no fees account now when your employer no longer sponsors the account and options to access a HSBA (health savings brokerage account) for more investment options. The new options also drastically lower the cash amount threshold to invest.

    You brought up 401k fees and I’m slightly confused by it. Help me out here. While yes I agree you want to go as low as possible….don’t you have to take the funds return into exception? For example in my 401k I do have an option to invest in a S&P fund at a low .05 expense ratio. But the historical return average since inception is 13.08. There is a growth fund that has a historical return average since inception of 17.60 but the expense ratio is .52 Are you telling me I’m still better off with doing the fund with the lowest expense ratio?

    this channel doesnt talk about inflation or sequence of returns much does it. assuming your roth ira gets 7% returns on average over 37 years you should care about the purchasing power in that long span of time. idk how reliable 2.5 or 3 perscent annualy inflation is to real life but you could actually have 500k or even 300k in todays dollars meaning to live like somone with a 1m roth ira you would have to tack on more years of compounding etc

    • @JarradMorrow
      @JarradMorrow 4 дні тому

      This commenter must be new to this channel because I have talked about inflation and sequence of return risk in other videos. You don't know how reliable that annual inflation rate is because none of us do. We can't see into the future so assume whatever rate you want to. At what point in the video did I say that $1 million is going to be enough to live on?

    You said something blatantly wrong, and it’s really bothering me. In what since would you be decreasing diversification or increasing risk by having overlap in your funds? This makes no logical sense. I know people say to avoid this for complication sake, but this is the first I’ve heard anyone say anything along these lines, and it’s just objectively wrong. Could you expand on what you mean? I guess maybe I’m missing something…

    • @JarradMorrow
      @JarradMorrow 4 дні тому

      It actually makes complete logical sense. Fund overlap is when you hold at least two funds that invest in the same stocks. For simplicity sake lets say someone holds VTI (total u.s. stock fund roughly 3,600 stocks) and VOO (S&P 500 fund roughly 500 stocks) at the same time. By holding both those funds at the same time, more of your money is concentrated in those 500 stocks held within both funds. Putting more money into a few stocks does reduce diversification and increase risk.

    Hi, I feel like I’m misunderstanding something. If you keep raising your monthly contribution up, wouldn’t you over contribute and receive a type of penalty on your Roth and 401k?

    Very interesting! Living in a state where this is not available I didn't even know that this was a thing. I just figured everyone was just stuck with the utility that was in their area. Now I wish this was available where I live as well. The free market is a great thing for consumers!

    When you do this, is it something that you are going to get dinged for that termination fee if you don't transfer on the day it expires, or is there a way to set it up to transfer when the contract expires.... and then I guess the second part to that question is are you contracted with someone if you haven't done this before? My provider is NIPSCO, but I've never looked at anything other than the option to do renewable energy which is way more expensive.

    I hear you loud and clear about having to be enrolled in an HDHP, but out of ignorance is there any kind of workaround for veterans who have VA healthcare? If I already have healthcare do I still have to pay for another healthcare plan to take advantage of this? The pros clearly outweigh the cons, but it was a question worth asking!

    I’m confused…is this video saying to take the money you put into your employer’s HSA and then use it toward buying index funds….or is it saying to put money into the HSA and just let it sit there??

    Well, since these zero funds opened, the returns are pretty much exactly like the index funds. I don't fear tthem at all.
